Playdough

Making playdough is a great activity for young children as it encourages creativity and imagination, while also providing a tactile and sensory experience. The process of mixing the ingredients and creating different colors and textures helps to develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination as well as understanding of basic scientific concepts. The ephemeral nature of the playdough also teaches children about the transience of things and helps them appreciate the beauty in impermanence.

Ingredients
  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup of salt
  • 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 cups of boiling water
  • Food coloring (optional)

Steps

1
Mix Ingredients
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and cream of tartar.
  • Add the vegetable oil to the bowl and mix well.
  • Add the boiling water to the mixture and stir well until begins to form a dough-like consistency.
2
Make Your Colours

If you want colored playdough, add a few drops of food coloring or paint to the dough and knead it until the color is evenly distributed.

3
Ready To Use
  • Allow the playdough to cool for a few minutes before kneading it until it becomes smooth and pliable.
  • Store the playdough in an airtight container or a plastic bag when not in use.

Notes

  • If the playdough is too dry, add a small amount of water and knead it into the dough.
  • If the playdough is too wet, add a small amount of flour, then knead it into the dough.
  • You can store the playdough in an airtight container, but it will eventually dry out and crumble.
